Medical Services Lead
Job Purpose:
The jobholder is responsible for providing clinical leadership through the establishment, implementation, and maintenance of high patient care standards, ensuring clinical practices align with current medical guidelines, best practices, and AGC Tenwek Hospital policies. This role oversees the activities of the medical units.
Key Responsibilities / Duties / Tasks:
- a) Identify and facilitate the development and implementation of healthcare services and programs that meet community needs and align with the hospital’s strategic goals.
- b) Collaboratively participate in long-term strategic planning for medical services to enhance the hospital’s growth and sustainability.
- c) Develop and implement clinical protocols, pathways, and policies to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
- d) Lead quality assurance and improvement efforts by monitoring key quality metrics and spearheading initiatives for continuous improvement in patient care and safety.
- e) Conduct morbidity and mortality reviews, root cause analysis, and performance improvement plans to drive continuous improvement.
- f) Ensure all clinical and nursing operations comply with relevant healthcare regulations and standards.
- g) Provide administrative oversight for budget management and resource allocation to ensure optimal utilization and efficiency.
- h) Ensure accurate and complete medical records are maintained, complying with legal and hospital requirements.
- i) Engage with the community to promote public health initiatives, education, and preventive care programs on both regular and emergency occasions.
- j) Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including patients, families, staff, and the broader community.
- k) Oversee risk management programs to identify and mitigate potential legal and clinical risks.
- l) Oversee the implementation and utilization of health information systems (e.g., Electronic Health Records) to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
- m) Foster effective collaboration between medical units and other organizational units to ensure cohesive and integrated patient care.
- n) Develop and maintain partnerships with other healthcare providers, academic institutions, and professional organizations to enhance services and professional development opportunities.
- o) Facilitate the implementation of work plans for various corporate initiatives in the Directorate, including Nursing, Medical, and Medical Education.
- p) Oversee the development and implementation of work plans and budgets for departments reporting directly to Medical Services.
- q) Perform other duties as assigned relevant to the role from time to time.

Job Competencies:
Academic Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Medicine, or a related field.
- A master’s degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA), Public Health (MPH), Business Administration (MBA), or a related clinical field is preferred.
Professional Qualifications:
- Certifications offered by the Kenya Medical Association (KMA), Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK), or Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).
- Clinical certifications (e.g., Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Medical Officer) are beneficial.
Professional Membership/Licensing Requirements:
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council or any relevant certification body, with a valid practicing license.
Work Experience:
- Healthcare Management: A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in healthcare management in Kenya, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within a hospital or clinical services setting.
- Clinical Services Oversight: Experience overseeing various clinical services, including pharmacy, diagnostics, ancillary services, critical care, endoscopy, surgical services, and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD).
- Operational Management: Experience managing healthcare operations, including budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Regulatory Knowledge: An in-depth understanding of Kenyan healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and compliance requirements.
- Quality and Performance Improvement: Experience with quality improvement initiatives, patient safety, and performance metrics.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with medical staff, nursing, and other clinical and non-clinical departments.
Functional Skills and Behavioral Competencies:
- Proven experience in clinical services and healthcare management, including strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Demonstrable aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving.
- Working knowledge of data analysis, business intelligence, and performance/operation metrics.
- Knowledge of relevant statutory legislation and regulations.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with senior management.
- Strong sense of confidentiality and discretion.
