Save the Children Seeks Child Protection Community Workers in Nairobi

Save the Children, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting children’s rights and providing relief in developing countries, is looking for dedicated individuals to join their team as Child Protection Community workers. The positions are based in the wards under the Dadaab sub-county.

Role Purpose

The primary responsibility of the Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) volunteers is to identify, refer, and initially register cases of abuse and violence against children, women, and men in local communities. They will collaborate closely with local authorities, including chiefs, ward administrators, and the area advisory council, under the guidance of the Department of Children Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Case Management: Volunteers will manage and support individual case management through the Best Interests Assessment (BIA) and Best Interests Determination (BID) processes in field offices.
  • Community Mobilization: They will mobilize the community, train, and collaborate with the Area Advisory Council (AAC) unit in their respective wards.
  • Case Identification and Reporting: Volunteers will identify, register, and monitor child protection trends and GBV incidents in the host community, reporting weekly and referring cases as needed.
  • Child-Friendly Spaces: Monitoring attendance and ensuring the safety of child-friendly spaces.
  • Progress Reporting: Producing timely progress reports with quantitative and qualitative information on child protection activities.
  • Vulnerable Cases: Identifying and referring vulnerable cases following internal Save the Children criteria and established interagency referral systems.
  • Community Sensitization: Conducting community mobilization and sensitization activities to raise awareness about Save the Children’s work and child protection issues in Dadaab.
  • Assessment and Documentation: Conducting assessments for unaccompanied minors (UAMs) and separated children, documenting BIDs, and identifying possible durable solutions.
  • Home Visits: Responding to protection concerns by conducting home visits and follow-ups at the ward level.
  • Daily Reporting: Reporting daily on child protection issues and information collected on children in the ward.
  • Cultural Activities: Proposing culturally friendly activities for children based on their needs.
  • Community Support: Establishing links and working closely with existing community structures to support vulnerable children10.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Conduct regular follow-up visits to monitor the rehabilitation and reintegration of beneficiaries.
  • Representation: Representing Save the Children at the field level with professionalism, honesty, and commitment.
  • Methodology Proposals: Propose appropriate methodologies for dealing with children and women in agreement with local customs.
  • Translation Services: Assisting Child Protection Officers with interviews and providing translation/interpretation services, including sign languages.
  • Additional Duties: Performing any other duties assigned by the CP/BID officer and other managers.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A graduate degree in social work, social sciences, relevant discipline, or a diploma with one year of experience.
  • Good communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Ability to handle a large protection caseload.
  • Proficiency in IT, including Word and database software.
  • Ability to adapt to changing program priorities and emergencies.
  • A positive attitude towards community work and innovative problem-solving.
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s Child Protection Policy.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in staff management.
  • Understanding and experience in case management processes.
  • Experience in designing and facilitating training sessions.
  • Experience working in insecure environments.
  • Experience in documenting and presenting BID cases in an interagency panel.
